The HEAT is approaching: How to prevent heatstroke in your pet.

Winter’s finale is approaching, and we are ready for the sunshine to make its grand entrance. Activities, with your pet, outside can be cut short if your pet develops heatstroke. All pet owners need to know the common signs and symptoms of heatstroke and ways to keep their pets cool during the summer months.

What is heatstroke?

Just like humans, pets can develop heatstroke as well. Heatstroke, also known as overheating or heat exhaustion, occurs when your animal reaches a body temperature of 105 degrees. Cats and dogs usually cool their body off by panting. It is important to remember your pets can not control their body temperature by sweating so keeping them cool is a TOP priority.  Your pets can develop heatstroke if:

  • They are left outside on hot days with NO shade
  • High humidity
  • Your pet is left inside a hot car
  • Your pet does not have access to water during hot days
  • Excessive exercise

Heat stroke is an emergency health condition that will cause death if not treated promptly.

Signs and Symptoms of Heatstroke in your pets

If your pet is outside on a hot day, please be cognitive of signs such as:

  • Weakness
  • Sudden collapse
  • Excessive panting
  • Seizures
  • Agitation
  • Increased heart rate
  • Diarrhea
  • Stumbling
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Muscle tremors
  • Excessive drooling

Time is of the essence when your pet starts exhibiting signs of heatstroke. Immediately take  your pet inside to a cool place and offer first aid treatment like:

  • Apply a fan to maximize heat loss
  • Cover with a lukewarm towel to bring body temp down
  • Apply rubbing alcohol to paws
  • Offer cool water to drink

If your pet’s condition is not improving, take them to the nearest animal hospital for advance support.

Ways to prevent heatstroke
