April is heartworm awareness month.
Heartworm disease is a serious disease. It can be potentially fatal for dogs and cats. When an infected mosquito bites an animal it spreads the disease to other animals. Heartworms live in the heart, lungs and blood vessels of animals that are infected with the worm. It can cause severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. The good news is that heartworm can be prevented. There are preventative mediations that can be given in the form of a monthly pill or an injection every 6 months. Your dog should be on a heartworm prevention all year long.
